The 'Champions of the Quarter' rankings, released for the January-March 2026 period, recognise excellence across six geographical zones based on incremental progress made in key development indicators.

 

In Zone-2 (Northern India), Uttar Pradesh emerged as the clear winner, with Bansgaon in Gorakhpur and Rupaideeh in Gonda bagging the top honours. Zone-3 (Southern India) was led by Tamil Nadu, with Kalvarayan Hills in Kallakurichi and Timri in Ranipet clinching the top slots.

 

Western India saw Gujarat dominate, as Nizar and Kukarmunda—both in Tapi district—topped Zone-4. In Central India, Madhya Pradesh's Manpur in Umaria and Tendukheda in Damoh emerged as the champions. The Aspirational Blocks Programme, launched by the Centre's policy think tank, aims to fast-track development in underdeveloped blocks through outcome-based monitoring and convergence of central and state schemes. The rankings are computed using a delta-based scoring system that measures improvement across sectors such as health, nutrition, education, agriculture, water resources, and basic infrastructure.

 

Officials said the performance of these blocks is a testament to effective district-level administration, robust convergence mechanisms, and active community participation. The exercise is part of NITI Aayog's ongoing efforts to foster competitive federalism and evidence-based planning at the grassroots level.

 

"The quarterly rankings not only recognise excellence but also create a healthy competitive spirit among districts to accelerate development outcomes," an official source said. (KNS)
