As mayors cease to exist, commissioners to function as administrators of SMC, JMC for 2 years

Srinagar, Nov 30 (KNS): As the term of elected representatives of Srinagar and Jammu Municipal Corporations has expired after completion of five years, the government has appointed commissioners of SMC and JMC as their administrators for two years. 


According to an order issued by Housing and Urban Development Department J&K, a copy of which lies with KNS, the commissioners of SMC and JMC for two years or until the establishment of the corporation.

The order states that as thee respective terms of elected representatives of Municipal Corporations of Srinagar and Jammu have expired and a difficulty has arisen in giving effect to the provisions of the Act for the purpose of smooth administration and providing better services to public, the government has made an order namely Short Title and Commencement and Removal of Difficulties. 

“Short title and commencement: This order may be called the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation (Removal of Difficulties) Order, 2023. It shall be deemed to have come into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force for a period of two years or till it is revoked by the Government, whichever is earlier,” it reads. 

The order reads that the difficulties arisen on account of expiry of the term of elected representatives of Jammu Municipal Corporation and Srinagar Municipal Corporation are hereby removed by appointing Commissioners of Jammu Municipal Corporation and Srinagar Municipal Corporation as Administrators.

It added that they shall exercise the functions and duties of the Corporation(s) as provided under the Act. (KNS)
