Zuhaib Mir Says Kashmir Won’t Forget Its Martyrs, Despite Restrictions

Srinagar, July 13(KNS): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Zuhaib Yousuf Mir said that July 13 marks nearly a century since 22 individuals were martyred during a protest against the monarchy of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.

He said they stood against forced labour, administrative apathy, and religious persecution, and demanded justice.

He said that during a peaceful protest, all 22 were shot dead, and their killings were used as a warning to others who opposed the monarchy.

He said their actions were similar to those of India's freedom fighters who resisted British rule and demanded democratic governance.

Mir said that those who died are not only historical figures but ancestors who shaped the region’s conscience and commitment to never surrender before authoritarian rule.
He said that July 13 is a day for all Kashmiris to remember them, pray for them, and reaffirm their ideals.

He said that people were not allowed to gather and offer prayers at the martyrs' graveyard.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHe added that despite being a citizen who believes in democracy, he found himself detained in his own home.

Mir said he felt alienated and distrusted. He said that being denied access to the graveyard sent a message that the sacrifices of the martyrs did not matter. He added that it suggested their struggle for democracy held no value and that the past was being erased.

He also said that the current situation resembles the one a century ago when people were treated as second-class citizens. He added that silence and fear of losing favour should not stop people from speaking out.

He said that even though people may be detained and denied rights, the ideas of democracy, freedom of expression, and justice would live on. He said the sacrifice made by the martyrs would not be forgotten and would continue to inspire future generations.

He added, “You may forget, but we remember — just like the tree remembers the axe.”(KNS).
