Jammu, Aug 26(KNS): The pilgrimage to the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine has been halted due to continuous heavy rainfall in the region since late last night.
Officials from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) confirmed that the Himkoti route was the first to be closed as rain intensified, prompting the suspension of the entire yatra for safety reasons.

Meanwhile, a flood alert has been issued across several areas of the Jammu region as rivers and streams continue to swell.
The Tawi river, which flows through Jammu city, has already crossed the danger mark in Udhampur. According to Kashmir Weather, a local monitoring agency, water levels in the Tawi are likely to breach flood alert and danger marks in Jammu in the coming hours.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain vigilant.(KNS).
