Srinagar, Feb 08 (KNS): At least seven dead bodies were recovered from the debris of an avalanche in the rescue operation at Jawahar Tunnel that was started after an avalanche hit the tunnel on Thursday evening.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anantnag, Muhammad Younis Mallik told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that seven dead bodies were recovered while three persons were rescued alive in the rescue operation since last evening at Jawahar Tunnel.
He said that the identity of the deceased persons is being ascertained, adding that the rescue operation is still going on at the tunnel to trace another local Parvez Ahmad who got also got trapped in the avalanche.
DC further stated that bodies of two prisoners hailing from Punjab were among the seven bodies recovered from the debris.
DC Anantnag further said that Army, paramilitary, police, SDRF and locals have supported the administration in making this operation successful by coordinating with officials at the incident site.
Pertinently, reports said ten persons comprising six policemen, two fire service personnel and two prisoners were buried alive after a snow avalanche struck a police post near Jawahar Tunnel.
A rescue operation was immediately launched to rescue the trapped persons. (KNS)
