Srinagar, Aug 13 (KNS): CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami Monday expressed grief and sorrow over the death of former Speaker and ten-time Member of the Lok Sabha, Somnath Chatterjee.
In a statement he said Somnath Chatterjee, a veteran parliamentarian, always stood for fulfilling democratic aspirations of people of Jammu and Kashmir and safeguarding the constitutional rights of the state guaranteed under Article 370 of Indian Constitution.
Somnath Chatterjee, who played an important role in defending the foundations of the Indian Constitution particularly its secular democratic foundations and federalism, always believed in federal values and giving more powers to states.
As an eminent lawyer by profession, he also took up the cause of the working class and the deprived to ensure justice is delivered to them.
He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to his wife and children. (KNS)
