New Delhi, September 1 (KNS):The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Tuesday withdrew its proposed September 5 demonstration in the national capital after the Centre assured the Supreme Court that criminal proceedings arising from the July 20 protest would not be pursued.

The decision followed the Supreme Court’s acceptance of the government’s undertaking and its direction that FIRs registered in connection with the student demonstrations between July 20 and 25 be quashed. The order covers cases registered against students across states and Union Territories.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the Centre, through the Delhi Police, along with the governments of Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Maharashtra, had moved applications seeking closure of the FIRs associated with the protests.

Mehta said the move was in keeping with the assurance given by the Centre to CJP representatives during discussions held on July 25. He also assured the court that no fresh FIRs would be lodged in connection with the protest-related events during the period from July 20 to 25.

“In view of the positive assurances of the Government of India and the judicial sanctity bestowed upon them today, and in view of the order being passed by this Court, the CJP deems it appropriate to withdraw the call for the march on September 5,” Das told the court.

The organisation had announced the September 5 mobilisation after alleging that the Centre had failed to act on its commitments concerning cases against student demonstrators.

The proposed procession was scheduled to start from India Gate and culminate at the Delhi Police Headquarters. The CJP had said relatives of NEET aspirants who died by suicide, along with people who claimed to have been subjected to police action during the July agitation, would participate in the march.

The group had also accused the government of dragging its feet on the withdrawal of the FIRs and had sought a written commitment on assurances made during the July 25 talks.

With the Supreme Court now recording the Centre’s undertaking and ordering the quashing of the cases, the CJP said it would await implementation of the directions before deciding its next course of action.(KNS)
