Srinagar, Jul 18 (KNS): Welcoming the Supreme Court's direction for a separate law for curbing lynching menace in the country, senior Congress leader and former union minister Prof Saifuddin Soz on Wednesday said it was a great relief to people, particularly to down trodden, including minorities.
In a statement issued to KNS, Prof Soz said, “The Supreme Court’s judgment on widespread menace of lynching in the country, asking the Central government to initiate immediate steps for enactment of a separate law for punishment for this crime, has come as a great relief to the people of India, particularly, to the downtrodden including minorities."
He said it is a measure of great relief when the court described the situation in the country as extremely bad and observed strongly that there can be no shadow of doubt that the authorities have the principal obligation to see that vigilantism, be it cow vigilantism or any other vigilantism, does not take place.
“It is further a matter of great relief to the nation that the Supreme Court has passed this strong judgment at a time when Parliament is in session”, he said in the statement.
He alleged that if the government had paid any attention initially, it would not have become a widespread menace. (KNS)
