Srinagar, May 24 (KNS): Police on Thursday arrested scores of non-locals beggars who were found soliciting alms in the markets especially in the commercial hub Lal chowk.
Earlier, the District Magistrate (DM) Srinagar had directed police to arrest those persons who will be found soliciting alms in public place, in and around religious places and other private premises.
According to the KNS correspondent, various police stations started a drive against the beggars today while as dozens of beggars were taken to the police stations.
Witnesses said that the non-local beggars who were ‘irritating’ pedestrians in the Lal chowk were arrested by the Police and were lodged in Police Station Kothi Bagh.
Meanwhile, the locals termed the order issued by the Deputy Commissioner as a sigh of relief to them, saying that the beggars especially non-locals had created nuisance for the general public. (KNS)
