Srinagar, Feb 23 (KNS): Condemning the attacks on Kashmiris in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the country’s fight was for Kashmir not against Kashmiris.
Speaking out for the first time since violence broke out in many parts of the India after the Pulwama attack the PM said. “Our fight is for Kashmir, not against Kashmiris. Kashmiris have suffered the most due to terrorism, and the rest of the country must stand in their support,” he said at a rally in Rajasthan's Tonk.
Since the Pulwama attack, there have been reports of attacks and social boycotts of Kashmiris across India. From West Bengal to Jammu, several Kashmiri students and businessmen have complained of being harassed or beaten up. Hundreds have returned to Kashmir to escape persecution.
Soon after the statement of Prime Minister, National Conference Vice President and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has thanked Modi for condemning the attack on Kashmiris across the country. He as per KNS correspondent hoped that such attacks would now stop following PM's speech.
“It’s been a more than a week since the terrible attack in Pulwama & more than a week that Kashmiris have been bearing the brunt of the public anger. Perhaps finally after PM @narendramodi Sb has spoken these forces targeting Kashmiris will stop in their tracks,” Omar wrote on his twitter handle.
It is to mention here that the Supreme Court Friday directed chief secretaries and DGPs of 11 states to take “prompt’ and "necessary" action to prevent incidents of threat, social boycott and violence against Kashmiris following the Pulwama t attack.
It also sought responses from the Centre and the states where incidents of threat and violence against Kashmiris have taken place after the February 14 attack in which in which over 40 CRPF personnel were killed.
“The chief secretaries, the DGPs and the Delhi Police Commissioner are directed to take prompt and necessary action to prevent all the incidents of threat, assault, social boycott and other coercive acts against Kashmiris and other minorities in the aftermath of the terrorist attack of February 14,” said a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
