Srinagar, Sep 10 (KNS): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in New Delhi to attend the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled to be held on September 12 and 13, with the UN chief expected to underline the importance of a multipolar world order and reforms in multilateral institutions, including the UN Security Council.

Guterres has been invited to address the open session of the BRICS Summit on September 13. The theme of the summit is “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Development”.

According to the UN, Guterres is expected to highlight how the economic, demographic and geopolitical realities of today's world are significantly different from those that existed in 1945.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the Secretary-General would emphasise that the changing balance of power in the world must be reflected in global institutions.

Guterres is expected to argue that multipolarity can contribute to a more balanced representation in the international system, but reforms of existing multilateral structures are necessary to achieve this objective.

Several countries, including India, have long called for comprehensive reforms of the Security Council, arguing that its current 15-member structure does not adequately reflect the geopolitical and economic realities of the 21st century.

India has been pursuing its campaign for permanent membership of the UN Security Council and has consistently advocated comprehensive reforms of the global body's top decision-making organ.

During his visit, Guterres is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hold bilateral meetings with other leaders and senior officials attending the BRICS Summit.

The summit is expected to deliberate on a range of issues, including the global economy, sustainable development, multilateral cooperation, global governance, innovation and pressing international challenges.

Guterres' participation is expected to give added prominence to discussions on reforming multilateral institutions and making the global governance architecture more representative and responsive to contemporary challenges.(KNS)
