Srinagar, Sept 17 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has formally accepted a Private Member’s Resolution moved by Budgam MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi concerning Hokersar Wetland, a Ramsar site, under Rule 179, the legislator said on Thursday.

In a post on X, Mehdi said the resolution seeks to address issues concerning land and the rights of individuals in the area in the context of wetland conservation.

“I won’t let the state grab land of individuals in the name of conservation,” Mehdi said in his post.

The resolution is expected to come up before the House after the prescribed balloting process. A report said the resolution seeks examination of the present and historical extent of Hokersar Wetland and adjoining habitation and agricultural areas, with the stated objective of protecting the rights of affected residents.

Mehdi has previously raised concerns over the ongoing demarcation exercise at Hokersar and urged authorities to ensure that the legitimate interests of residents of adjoining villages are not compromised in the name of conservation.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The Budgam MLA also said he had submitted a Private Member’s Bill seeking an amendment to the J&K Reservation Act, 2004, concerning the criteria for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

“The Assembly must stand with the people,” Mehdi said.

Mehdi has previously raised concerns in the Assembly over the reservation policy and sought greater clarity on the status of the government’s review of the existing framework.

The developments come as Mehdi continues to raise issues related to land rights, reservation and other matters concerning his constituency through the Assembly.(KNS)
