Chairman NLCO Calls for Urgent Attention to Pokhribal, Nigeen and Anchar

Chairman NLCO Calls for Urgent Attention to Pokhribal, Nigeen and Anchar

Srinagar,29 July (KNS) : In a significant development for lake conservation efforts in Kashmir, the Legislative Committee on Environment, led by M.Y. Tarigami, visited Nigeen Lake to assess ongoing ecological preservation measures.

Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo, who accompanied the delegation as Chairman of the Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO), welcomed the committee and took them on a tour of the lake. The visit showcased Nigeen’s well-maintained condition largely free from plastic and solid waste which is a result of persistent efforts by LCMA and dedicated stakeholders.

“When legislation walks the shorelines, change isn’t far behind. Grateful for a vital visit,” said Mr. Wangnoo, expressing gratitude to the committee for their time and concern. He also extended appreciation to the administration and LCMA for their unwavering support in safeguarding Nigeen.

During the visit, a stakeholder proposed removing lily weeds from the Umer Colony side. Mr. Wangnoo strongly objected, explaining that these aquatic plants play a crucial ecological role for naturally absorbing pollutants and filtering waste inflow. Hasty removal, he warned, could lead to severe ecological consequences.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The committee also visited Pokhribal (Chota Nigeen), where drainage challenges and waste inflow were discussed. Mr. Wangnoo emphasized that while Nigeen reflects success, Anchar Lake remains neglected. He, along with members of the committee, unanimously recommended that Anchar Lake be brought under the jurisdiction of LCMA or another competent authority to ensure structured restoration and management.

“Collective responsibility is needed at Nigeen, urgent intervention needed for Anchar — our lakes cry, and we must listen?” Mr. Wangnoo stated.

“Policy meets purpose as Hon’ble Environment Committee sees Kashmir’s lakes up close. A powerful step forward: legislative oversight with eyes on Nigeen, ears to the cries of Anchar,” he added, reiterating the urgent need for a coordinated policy shift.

The visit reflected a strong alignment between policy oversight and on-ground conservation efforts, offering hope that all of Kashmir’s lakes including Dal, Nigeen, Gilsar, Khushalsar Anchar and Wular will receive the attention they desperately deserve.(KNS)
