Jammu, Sep 20 (KNS): Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday laid the foundation stones for renovation, restoration and development projects at the heritage sites of Purmandal and Uttervehini in Samba district, involving a combined cost of over Rs 14 crore.

The projects include works worth Rs 7.15 crore for the revival of the ancient heritage of Purmandal and Rs 6.85 crore for renovation, restoration and related development at the sacred Uttervehini site.

Addressing the gathering, Sinha said the projects were aimed at preserving the region's cultural heritage while improving facilities for pilgrims and visitors.

He said heritage conservation was not merely about restoring old structures but also about connecting future generations with the region's history, traditions and cultural identity.

“A nation that forgets its heritage loses its foundation. But a nation that respects, preserves and revives its roots ensures that its future generations stand with confidence, resilience, self-belief and a strong sense of identity,” Sinha said.

The LG said Purmandal, located along the Devika River, has for centuries remained a site associated with saints, sages and spiritual seekers, with its ancient temples, stone carvings, ponds and other historical structures reflecting its cultural and architectural significance.

He said the old Lakshmi Narayan Temple, old Shiva Temple and old Ram Temple at Purmandal, along with historic temple complexes at Uttervehini, would be restored using modern conservation techniques while retaining traditional architectural features.

Sinha said the restoration of the sites would also contribute to the development of Jammu and Kashmir as a destination for spiritual and cultural tourism.

He said improved infrastructure, pathways and lighting would facilitate pilgrim movement and strengthen connectivity with major religious destinations, including Mata Vaishno Devi, Shiv Khori, Raghunath Temple and Baba Amarnath.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The LG also highlighted the potential economic benefits of heritage tourism, saying increased tourist footfall could generate opportunities for local handicrafts, hospitality, homestays, transport and food businesses.

“By improving access to these sacred places and enhancing their grandeur and dignity, we are opening the doors to the divine spiritual experience of Purmandal and Uttervehini for spiritual seekers arriving from different parts of the country and the world,” he said.

Sinha said the restoration of heritage sites would also help younger generations develop a stronger connection with their cultural roots.

“In the journey towards a developed India, preserving our cultural identity is as important as building highways, digital networks and industrial corridors. Physical development gives momentum to the region and cultural heritage gives society direction and soul,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor reiterated his commitment to strengthening road connectivity to Purmandal and Uttervehini.

He also appreciated the Samba district administration for providing land for the establishment of the Mata Devika Ved Pathshala at Purmandal and said funds for its construction would soon be sanctioned through the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.

On the occasion, Sinha also launched the GCC Gurha Slathia magazine.
