Kashmir shuts on Geelani’s call, restrictions imposed in several areas

Srinagar, May 25 (KNS): A complete shutdown was on Saturday observed across the Valley following the call given by Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani over the killing of a militant commander Zakir Musa in Tral gunfight and a civilian Zahoor Ahmad of Pulwama district.

However, strict restrictions were imposed in many areas of Srinagar and other parts of the Valley to thwart any possible protests throughout the day against the death of Zakir Moosa.

Moosa, the chief of Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH), was killed in a gunfight in Dadsara area of Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Friday.

Witnesses said that police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in strength in Srinagar’s Old city areas here who had erected concertina wires on the roads, halting pedestrians as well as vehicular movement in the restriction bound areas.

Restrictions were imposed in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Nowhatta, Rainawari, Khanyar, Safakadal and M R Gung police station, while as partial restrictions were imposed in areas falling under jurisdiction of Maisuma and Kralkhud police stations.

Moreover, all the shops, business establishments, private offices and petrol pumps were closed while as the traffic was also thin on the roads.

Notably, all the colleges and schools across the Valley also remained closed for the second consecutive day today. The class work in educational institutes across the Valley was suspended since Friday as ‘precautionary measure’ following the killing of a top militant commander Zakir Moosa.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan had told KNS that the educational institutions will remain closed today (Saturday).

Moreover, the mobile internet services that were snapped on Thursday evening were restored today at various places. However, the internet speed was 2G while 4G continued to remain suspended.

The train services from Baramulla-Banihal continued to remain suspended for the second straight day due to security reasons.

Meanwhile, a police official said that the situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control throughout the day. (KNS)
