Gulmarg June 03 (KNS): Apni Party senior leader Ghulam Hassan Mir onTuesday said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have always stood for democracy, peace, and religious harmony, and now urgently require government support to revive the region’s struggling tourism sector.

According to KNS, Mir was speaking during the Gulmarg Chalo event, where he emphasized the message of unity and brotherhood despite challenging weather conditions. “You can see how many came out in the rain, just to show that we support peace and stand against terrorism,” he said.

He stressed the inclusive spirit of Kashmir, pointing to its diverse religious sites. “Look around — there is a temple, a mosque, and a Gurudwara. This is the real image of Jammu and Kashmir. Unfortunately, a wrong picture is often portrayed, but in reality, we are hospitable and compassionate people,” he said.

Mir expressed deep concern over the economic fallout due to the decline in tourism. “This is a big problem — not just for workers, but also for hotel owners, tour guides, and taxi drivers. Many have sold their land to buy vehicles, and now they’re unable to repay bank loans,” he said.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

While acknowledging efforts such as the Chief Minister’s cabinet meeting in Gulmarg, he called for more meaningful action. “Tourism cannot be revived by symbolic spending alone. We need regular and well-organized tourism events at key destinations to attract visitors and build confidence.”

Appealing to the central government, he said, “The Centre should organize national-level meetings and official events in Kashmir. Such steps help create a positive environment and send a strong message of normalcy.”

Mir welcomed the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jammu on June 6 for the inauguration of the railway connection to Kashmir, but urged him to visit the Valley as well. “This is good news, but Kashmir is feeling isolated. The Prime Minister should also visit Kashmir. We need his support and presence here,” he said.

“The people of Kashmir are ready to welcome him with open hearts,” Mir added. “The revival of tourism and the local economy requires strong and sincere government intervention. We hope the Prime Minister responds positively.” (KNS)
