Says heritage farmlands being lost to unplanned urban sprawl, urges political shift towards eco-friendly growth
Srinagar, Oct 6 (KNS): Former IAS officer and former Advisor to the Governor, Khursheed Ahmad Ganai, has expressed deep concern over the rapid conversion of agricultural land in Jammu and Kashmir, warning that the Valley could turn into a “concrete jungle” within the next decade or two if immediate corrective measures are not taken.
Addressing a gathering, Ganai said that the unplanned development and large-scale construction activities across Kashmir are destroying fertile agricultural land that has sustained generations. “The Valley, known for its pristine environment and rich agricultural heritage, is fast losing its soul.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelIf this continues, in the next 10 to 15 years, Kashmir will resemble a concrete sprawl like Mumbai,” he cautioned.
Ganai lamented that both Kashmir and Jammu divisions are witnessing a disturbing trend of fertile farmlands being converted into residential and commercial plots. “This land came to us as a heritage. By destroying it, we are destroying our identity and our future,” he said.
Calling for a shift in political priorities, Ganai urged policymakers and citizens alike to rethink the meaning of development. “Politics too must change."(KNS)
