Srinagar, Dec 22 (KNS): The Department of Bioresources, University of Kashmir, on Monday organized the 2nd J&K International Conference on Breast and Allied Cancers at Gandhi Bhawan, University of Kashmir.
The three-day international conference is sponsored by ANRF–DST, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. It has drawn participation from oncologists, clinicians, researchers, academicians, and young scholars from India and other countries.
Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Mir, Organizing Secretary of the conference and faculty member of the Department of Bioresources, welcomed the participants and explained the purpose of the conference. He spoke about the increasing cases of breast and allied cancers in the region and stressed the need to link research, clinical practice, early detection, and public awareness.
During the inaugural session, the abstract book of the conference was released by the dignitaries.
Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, said cancer research requires cooperation between life sciences, clinical medicine, engineering, artificial intelligence, and public health. She said awareness programmes should reach institutions and communities beyond conference venues.
Registrar, University of Kashmir, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, said the university supports research collaboration and innovation in health-related fields. Principal and Dean, Government Medical College Srinagar, Prof. Iffat Hassan Shah, said GMC Srinagar has facilities for breast cancer diagnosis and care. She noted that trained female medical staff are available for screening and patient care.
Deputy Director General, CCRUM, New Delhi, Dr. Younus Iftekhar Munshi, said plant-based resources play an important role in healthcare. He informed that CCRUM provides funding support for interdisciplinary and cancer-related research.
Keynote speaker Prof. Sameer Koul, Senior Consultant Oncologist at Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, stressed the need to involve experts and institutions from outside the region. He said cancer awareness and early diagnosis programmes should also reach remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, Head of the Department of Bioresources, Dr. Riaz-ul-Rehman, spoke about the department’s work in basic and translational cancer research and highlighted the role of institutional collaboration.

A book authored by Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Mir on retinoids was also released on the occasion.
The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Mir, who thanked the Vice Chancellor, guests, speakers, sponsors, organizers, and participants. He said the conference aims to promote dialogue, research cooperation, and awareness on breast and allied cancers.(KNS)
