Mumbai, Oct 9 (KNS): A media delegation from Jammu and Kashmir, led by Neha Jalali, Director, Press Information Bureau (PIB) Jammu, and fully coordinated by PRO IIT Falguni Banerjee Naha and officials of PIB Mumbai, today visited the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay one of India’s premier institutions for science and technology education and research.

The delegation visited the Nanofabrication Facility at the Department of Electrical Engineering, where Professor Swaroop Ganguly, a leading expert in semiconductor technology, briefed the team about the institute’s advanced research in lithography, semiconductor fabrication, and nanotechnology.

Prof. Ganguly explained that semiconductors have become the “internal organs” of modern electronics, underlining their critical role in global technology. Sharing his 15 years of experience, he highlighted that nearly 60 percent of the world’s semiconductor production is concentrated in Taiwan, emphasizing India’s growing role in this strategic sector under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s “State-Up” program.

He also mentioned the reasonable participation of students from Jammu and Kashmir in various academic and research programmes at IIT Bombay. “We are witnessing active engagement from students of J&K who are pursuing advanced education and research here,” Prof. Ganguly noted.

The team later toured the IIT Bombay Research Park Foundation, a state-of-the-art innovation centre inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year. This high-security facility brings together industry and academia, encouraging joint research and development initiatives. So far, 34 companies have signed MoUs with IIT Bombay under its ASPIRE program.

Officials briefed the visiting journalists that the Research Park aims to attract global and domestic companies to collaborate with IIT Bombay and facilitate innovation-driven growth. Established in 2017, the 14-storey building serves as a hub for industrial research and technology incubation.

highlighted that IIT Bombay not only trains students but also provides them with numerous job and internship opportunities through partnerships with top companies.

The J&K team interacted with a female PhD scholar from Srinagar, pursuing research in Chemical Engineering. She briefed the media about her innovative work in biomedical devices, particularly in developing blood viscosity and cytometry equipment to enhance diagnostic tools for cancer and blood disorder patients.

Officials further explained that IIT Bombay has made major strides in multiple domains from defence technologies to agriculture innovations. One notable breakthrough is the anti-hail gun, which has been successfully deployed in Himachal Pradesh to protect apple crops. The institute has also established a technology transfer and licensing policy to help farmers and industries benefit from its research outcomes.

Speaking about institutional collaborations, IIT Bombay officials said the institute is open to research partnerships with universities and organizations from Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in biomedical, agricultural, and renewable energy sectors.

At the conclusion of the visit, the delegation was informed that Dr. Sharad Kumar Saraf, an alumnus of IIT Bombay, serves as the Chairman of the Board of Governors for both IIT Bombay and IIT Jammu, marking the first time an alumnus has chaired two IITs simultaneously.
It's to mention here that
IIT Bombay,Established in 1958, IIT Bombay is India’s second IIT and one of the nation’s foremost centers of excellence in engineering, science, and management. Over the decades, it has evolved into a global hub for advanced research, innovation, and technology development, producing some of the world’s most prominent scientists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers. The institute’s strong focus on industry-academia collaboration and cutting-edge research continues to position it as a leader in India’s technological transformation.(KNS)
