Srinagar, Aug 31 (KNS): The Supreme Court of India Friday morning deferred the crucial hearing on Article 35-A till 2nd week of January 2019.
Talking to Kashmir News Service (KNS), Mir Javid one of the members of the Civil Society Group accepted as an intervener in the case, said that three judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by chief justice of India Deepak Mishra after hearing the arguments of the petitioners and the counsels for the defendants, the J&K government and the Attorney General, Government of India deferred the hearing of the case till 2nd week of January 2019.
According to CPI (M) senior leader, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami who was also accepted as an intervener in the case and was also present in the hearing today said that the petitioners opposed the deferment of the case till 2nd week of January 2019.
However, he said that the three judge bench stating that there was no urgency to hear on the repeal of a provision came in to existence in 1954.
It may be recalled here that counsel for J&K government Shoaib Alam had moved an application a day before today’s crucial hearing to seek adjournment of the case in view of the proposed Panchayat and Municipal elections in the state.
According to General Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association (JKHCBA) Srinagar, Advocate G N Shaheen who along with other 25 lawyers from the association was present in the Apex Court said that the hearing of the case started at around 11:00 45 am and ended with the adjournment within 20-25 minutes.
He said that the three judge bench heard both sides patiently and later adjourned the hearing of the case till 2nd week of January 2019.
Advocate Shaheen also said all the parties who had come from JK hailed the association for pleading the case. (KNS)
