Guwahati, Sep 30 (KNS): India captain Shubman Gill created history by smashing the fastest double century in men's ODI cricket as India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI here on Wednesday.

Gill remained unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls as India chased down a target of 406 with 39 balls to spare, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Gill reached his double hundred in just 117 balls, bettering the previous record held by Ishan Kishan, who had taken 126 balls to score a double century against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2022.

The 27-year-old also became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple double centuries in men's ODI cricket. Gill's first double hundred came against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023.

Gill's innings was studded with 26 fours and eight sixes. He had earlier brought up his century in 62 balls, setting a new mark for the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian captain.

Rohit also reached a significant milestone during his innings, becoming only the seventh batter and the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to complete 12,000 runs in men's ODI cricket.

Earlier, the West Indies posted 405 for seven in their 50 overs, their highest-ever total in ODI cricket. John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo scored centuries, making it only the sixth occasion in ODI history that three batters from the same side had hit hundreds in an innings.

Campbell scored 101, Hope made 104 and Jangoo contributed 114 as the West Indies set India a target of 406.

India completed the chase at 406 for two in 43.3 overs, with Gill unbeaten on 223 and Ruturaj Gaikwad on 31. The victory gave India a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

The third and final ODI of the series will be played on Saturday in New Chandigarh.(KNS)
