Srinagar, July 9 (KNS) The Group of Concerned Citizens (GCC) has raised alarm over a landfill site that it says poses a threat to public health and the environment. In a recent meeting with the Divisional Commissioner, the group highlighted that residents in areas such as Eidgah, Lal Bazar, Soura, and even SKIMS Hospital may be exposed to harmful gases being emitted from the site.
“These gases can cause cancer, respiratory issues, infertility, and other health problems,” the group stated, urging authorities to conduct an immediate survey of gas levels in affected areas. They also called for regular air quality monitoring until a long-term solution is implemented.
The GCC emphasized the need for public awareness and the issuance of health advisories based on OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) guidelines. They recommended that residents be informed of safety measures to protect themselves from potential exposure.
Another area of concern raised was a dumping ground near Jamkash in Hyderpora, where waste disposal trucks are reportedly dumping garbage.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelGCC members observed that local women were seen handling waste with bare hands and no protective equipment. The group called for an immediate stop to this practice, citing health risks.
The meeting also addressed a range of civic issues, including drainage and sewer infrastructure, encroachment on public land, stalled flood prevention plans, and the conversion of agricultural land for construction purposes. The group stressed the need for better coordination among government departments and stronger regulations to manage urban development.
Food safety was also discussed, with the GCC urging regular checks on food hygiene, use of additives, and quality control to prevent health risks.
The Divisional Commissioner assured the delegation that the concerns would be taken seriously and necessary directions issued to the concerned departments for immediate action.(KNS).
