For Statehood, Sajad Lone says assembly resolution carries dignity, signatures don’t

Srinagar, Aug 15 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference (JKPC) chief and Handwara MLA Sajad Lone on urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to move a formal resolution on statehood in the Legislative Assembly rather than pursuing a door-to-door signature campaign.

In a detailed post on X, Lone said his party supports any movement towards statehood but questioned the legal and constitutional value of a signature campaign. He said the Supreme Court should be approached as a constitutional entity, not through what he called “Tom, Dick and Harry” methods. “Signature campaigns have no legal or constitutional sanctity,” he wrote.

Lone asked why the Chief Minister has shown reluctance to pass a resolution in the Assembly—an elected constitutional body. He said such a resolution would carry constitutional dignity and send a clear message to the Supreme Court, unlike political campaigns which, he argued, have no legal standing.

He also pointed out that similar signature campaigns, including one led by Yasin Malik, had no effect on legal processes. “Tell me one instance where a signature campaign altered legal interpretation,” he said.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Referring to recent Supreme Court proceedings, Lone said the court appeared to reaffirm its assent to Ladakh as a Union Territory. He questioned why the government had not submitted a resolution or position from the Assembly to the court. “Why didn’t you ensure that some sort of a resolution is sent to the Supreme Court? That was your duty,” he wrote. “Are you the CM just to enjoy perks, not take responsibility?”

He further asked whether Omar Abdullah’s refusal to bring a resolution was helping the state BJP avoid taking a clear stand on statehood.

“This is not a video game,” Lone wrote. “Please stop this childish and immature attitude. We will support any campaign unconditionally. But please ensure a resolution is passed and sent to the Supreme Court.”

He urged the CM to act his age and stature. “Don’t set the stage for denial of statehood. Don’t throw tantrums. Put an end to theatrics,” he said.(KNS).
