Srinagar, Aug 22 (KNS): Like other parts of the country, the Eid-ul-Azha was Wednesday celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir with religious fervor and gaiety.
The mega Eid-ul-Azha congregational prayer was held at Eidgah Srinagar, Dargah Hazratbal shrine and Khadi Mill Alochi Bagh.
Clashes also erupted at Eidgah following the congregational prayers led by Hurriyat Conference (M), Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq ended.
Besides, a huge gathering was also witnessed at other Eidgahs and grounds.
The religious scholars who led the congregational prayers at separate Eidgahs and grounds threw light on this sacred festival.
Eid-ul-Azha is the second most significant festival celebrated by the Muslim community across the world. It is also the time when the Hajj pilgrimage officially begins for the devout Muslims. The festival commemorates the event when Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) faith was tested by the Almighty, and a goat was sacrificed in place of his own son. For this reason, goat sacrifice is an important part of this festival.
After the Eid prayers today, people sacrificed animals to honour Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son before Allah. Later, distributed the meat among kith and kin besides needy.
People in Kashmir usually observe Eid-ul-Azha for three days and the festival begins with congregational prayers in the morning. However, holidays are officially observed for the first two days of the festival.
The first day of the festival was celebrated with religious fervor and enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, police said that isolated incidents of stone pelting were reported from Eid Gah Srinagar, Janglat Mandi Anantnag and Sopore after the conclusion of Eid prayers.
“However, Police exhibited utmost restraint in containing stone pelting mob,” police spokesman said in a statement issued here. (KNS)
