Over ₹2.5 Crore Transactions Reflect Growing Silk Industry in UT

Udhampur, July 11, (KNS): Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, IAS, Director Sericulture J&K, visited the Cocoon Auction Market at Udhampur today, where hundreds of silkworm rearers and silk buyers gathered with great enthusiasm. The market has seen active participation since July 1, with over 60,000 kilograms of green cocoons sold so far, amounting to transactions worth more than ?2.5 crore.

During the visit, the Director inspected the arrangements and facilities at the market, ensuring that both sellers and buyers were provided with a smooth, transparent, and hygienic auctioning environment. He stressed the importance of basic amenities and cleanliness to support a healthy trading atmosphere.

While interacting with stakeholders, Bhat shared that the highest price for silk cocoons reached ?1,600 per kilogram today. Around 1,600 silkworm farmers have sold their produce at the Udhampur market since the beginning of this month, showing growing trust and confidence among rearers. Due to the overwhelming response, the market will remain open for one more week.

"A proactive approach is vital for empowering rural communities, especially the weaker sections. Since more than 70% of cocoon produce is currently sold outside J&K, we are working to build strong market linkages within the Union Territory," he said.

He also emphasized that cocoon auction markets across Jammu province are being organized to attract buyers from within and outside the region, ensuring fair competition and better prices for local farmers.

The Director was accompanied by the District Sericulture Officer, Udhampur, along with other senior officers and field staff. Their presence highlighted the department’s united efforts to support silkworm rearers through improved infrastructure, training, and reliable market access.

The ongoing success of the Cocoon Auction Market at Udhampur reflects the department’s vision to make Jammu and Kashmir a leading hub for quality silk cocoon production in the country.(KNS)
