Darhama residents boycott “Back to Village-II” meeting

Srinagar, Nov 25 (KNS): Residents of Darhama, Tangmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Monday boycotted government “Back to Village-II” programme citing non-fulfillment of promises made in the “Back to Village-I” initiative in June this year.

According to KNS “Back to Village-II” meeting being held in Darhama had to be postponed as the residents raised objections. They said the promises made in a similar meeting in June this year were not fulfilled yet and they have no hope that second such meeting will yield anything positive for them.

The residents while raising slogans against the administration alleged that they were being misled in the name of developmental schemes as these schemes only exist on papers. Mohammad Ashraf Bhat, a protestor said that in the previous meeting, the residents had brought the problem of power transformer and other issues into the notice of the concerned authorities.

“That time authorities made commitment that all our genuine demands would be fulfilled soon. However, despite passing of several months, nothing has been done on ground and now the government is making publicity about Back to Village-II. When our demands from previous meeting could not be fulfilled, how it is possible that second such meeting will be beneficial for us,” he asked.

As the protests didn’t relent, the officers left the area without holding the meeting. Chairperson of Block Development Council (BDC) Chandal, Shaista confirmed that “Back to Village-II” meeting could not be held in Darhama. (KNS)
