Cold wave intensifies as mercury dips across J&K, Ladakh

 Srinagar, Jan 8 (KNS): A cold wave continued to grip Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Thursday, with several places recording the lowest temperatures of the season, officials said.

In the Kashmir Valley, sub-zero temperatures prevailed across most districts. Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 5.1 degrees Celsius, while the airport settled at minus 6.8 degrees. Qazigund and Budgam registered minus 5.4 degrees each, while Pahalgam recorded minus 8.6 degrees.

Gulmarg, a key tourist destination, registered a low of minus 9.2 degrees, while Sonamarg recorded minus 9.8 degrees. Shopian saw the mercury dip to minus 7.8 degrees, followed by Pulwama at minus 6.8 degrees and Anantnag at minus 6.3 degrees. In the Jammu region, temperatures remained above freezing in most areas, though Bhaderwah recorded minus 3.4 degrees Celsius and Rajouri minus 1.0 degree. Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 7.1 degrees, while Banihal settled at 3.7 degrees and Batote at 2.8 degrees.

Ladakh continued to experience severe cold conditions. Drass recorded a low of minus 24.7 degrees Celsius, while Leh settled at minus 14.6 degrees. Hanle registered minus 16.9 degrees, Kargil minus 13.4 degrees and Nyoma minus 20.1 degrees.

Weather officials said cold wave conditions are likely to persist in parts of the region over the next few days.(KNS).
