5 militants killed in Kulgam gunfight, 12 injured in post gunfight clashes

Srinagar, Feb 10 (KNS): Five militants were on Sunday killed in a long drawn gunfight in Kellam village of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. About twelve civilians are reported to have been injured in post gunfight clashes with the government forces.
Reports said government forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in the area after which the militants hiding in a house fired upon the government forces triggering a gunfight.
Heavy exchange of fire between the hiding militants and the government forces continues for several houses. Five militants are reported to have been killed in the gunfight.
Confirming the killing of five militants in the gunfight, the army’s Srinagar based spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said, “Five militants were killed in Kellam village of Kulgam district after a cordon and search operation was launched in the area as militants fired upon the forces triggering a gunfight which ended after several hours of firefight.” He however said that the identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, eye witnesses said that clashes erupted soon after the news about the gunfight spread in the area, adding that about a dozen people were injured in the clashes.
Hospital sources in district hospital Kulgam said that injured have been fired bullets and pellets.
Internet was suspended in the district soon after the gunfight broke out today morning. (KNS)
