Cold Wave to Persist, Light Snowfall Likely After January 22

Srinagar, January 08 (KNS): The 40-day harsh winter period known as Chillai Kalan, which began on December 21, 2025, has so far remained largely dry, with only 21 days left before it ends on January 30, 2026.

According to news agency KNS, the first 19 days of Chillai Kalan passed without any major snowfall or rainfall in the plains of Kashmir. Although some upper reaches witnessed light to moderate snowfall last week, the plains are yet to receive any snow this winter season.

Weather experts said the continued dry spell and clear skies have resulted in temperatures dropping several degrees below the freezing point, especially during nights and early mornings. They added that snowfall and rainfall require specific weather conditions, which are currently not favourable across Jammu and Kashmir.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast largely stable weather conditions across the region till January 22. During this period, the sky is expected to remain mostly partly cloudy.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

According to the forecast, isolated places in the Kashmir division may receive light rain or snowfall on January 16 and 17. The weather is likely to remain partly cloudy on January 18 and 19, while light snowfall is expected over higher reaches on January 20. January 21 is also expected to remain partly cloudy.

The Meteorological Centre further said that minimum temperatures across the region are likely to fall sharply till January 10. After that, a gradual rise of one to two degrees in night temperatures is expected.

The department has also predicted moderate to dense fog in the plains of the Jammu division during the next five days, which may reduce visibility during late night and early morning hours.

According to news agency KNS, people, especially travellers and motorists in fog-prone areas, have been advised to exercise caution. Farmers and orchardists have also been asked to plan their activities in view of the prevailing weather conditions.(KNS)
