Collapse Exposed Failure of National Project, Urges Centre to Use Mughal Road for Fruit, Essential Supplies
Srinagar, Sept 16 (KNS): JKPCC Chief Tariq Hameed Karra on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the government for what he called “inadequate and insensitive” relief to flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir, declaring that the ?209 crore financial support announced by the Centre was nothing short of a “joke” compared to the colossal losses suffered across sectors.
Karra, who travelled by road from Jammu to Srinagar to personally assess the devastation, said the floods have inflicted unprecedented damage on agriculture, horticulture, connectivity, personal and public property. “This is not just the loss of one industry it is a collective damage to our entire economy. People have lost homes, land, crops, and livelihoods. Yet New Delhi believes ?209 crore can heal these wounds. That is a cruel joke,” he said as per KNS.
JKPCC chief reminded that during the 2014–15 Nepal earthquake, India was “very liberal” in its financial assistance, while Kashmir’s own ?80,000 crore flood losses in 2014 took the government “over a year” to partially address. “What do they expect us to do with 209 crores? At best, it can repair one or two bridges or a few kilometers of road,” he remarked.
Karra announced that his party’s campaign “Our State, Our Right” would be suspended in view of the humanitarian crisis. “When survival itself is at stake, politics can wait. Right now, we stand in solidarity with farmers, fruit growers, transporters, and all affected communities,” he said.
He strongly criticized the collapse of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, calling it a “failed project.” “Within just a few years, the road has surrendered. Lakhs of tons of explosives used in construction have damaged the environment and ecology. This highway will remain a permanent problem,” Karra asserted, demanding that the Mughal Road be dedicated exclusively for apple transportation and essential commodities until the highway is restored.
The Congress leader also demanded a comprehensive rehabilitation and relocation package, waiver of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans, and interest-free fresh loans for farmers. “This is an extraordinary situation, and the Centre must show a human heart to understand the scale of destruction and trauma,” he said, warning that fruit rotting in trucks stranded for over 10 days will crush both growers and transporters under debt.
Calling for proactive governance, Karra urged the administration to move out of “cozy offices” and take charge on the ground. “Some departments have worked commendably, but senior bureaucracy cannot manage calamities on paper. We request the Chief Minister to direct officers to be visible among the people,” he said.(KNS)
