Zind Lal Jalla Memorial Lecture delivered by Prof Hangloo at Kashmir University

Srinagar, Mar 30 (KNS): The first Zind Lal Jalla Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof. Rattan Lal Hangloo, former vice chancellor, University of Allahabad and a reputed historian on Tuesday at an event organised at Ibn-e-Khaldoon auditorium of Kashmir University.

According to a statement, issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), the lecture was organised by Department of History, University of Kashmir, in association with the Office Dean, Social Sciences of the varsity.

The statement reads that Prof. Zind Lal Jalla retired from the Department of History, University of Kashmir in 1987, and passed away in Sharanpur in 1994.

Prof. M. Y Ganai, Dean Social Sciences and Head of the Department of History at the varsity recalled the contributions of Prof. Jalla.

He stated that Prof. Jalla was an eminent historian of Kashmir, and played an important role in the development of the discipline of history in the region, alongside other stalwarts like Prof. Ishaq Khan, Prof. A. Q Rafiquee and among others.

He added that Prof Jalla was an epitome of multi-disciplinary knowledge, and that he always encouraged students to study history through contemporary approaches.

Delivering the memorial lecture, Prof. Hangloo recalled his long association with Prof. Jalla, who retired from the department of history. Prof.

Hangloo spoke extensively of his scholarship and the dedication towards promotion of research on the history of Kashmir region. Prof. Hangloo's lecture also highlighted the spiritual culture of Kashmiris, and he praised Kashmiri vernacular poetry as being distinct and unique in South Asia for its focus on devotion and love for god.

Praising the composite culture of Kashmir, Prof. Hangloo mapped the historical roots of its development.

The function also saw release of Kashmir Journal of Social Sciences, which was attended by prominent academics of Kashmir region including Prof F. A. Masoodi, Dean Academic Affairs of the varsity, Prof. Nisar Ali, Prof. N. A Baba, and faculty members from various departments of the university.

The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Javeed-ul-Aziz, and vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Younis Rashid from the Department of History. (KNS)
