With GI tagging, Kashmiri Saffron earns demand in Dubai Food Security meet

Jammu, Dec 9 (KNS): The buyers showed great interest in the world famous Kashmiri Saffron which is powered by Geographical Indication (GI) Tag at the ongoing UAE-India Food Security Summit 2020 in Dubai.

Jammu and Kashmir's Principal Secretary Agriculture Navin K Choudhary launched the Kashmiri saffron at the UAE-India Food Security Summit 2020.

"I am delighted that for the first time, Kashmiri saffron has been introduced to the UAE market,” Choudhary said on the occasion.

Choudhary said Kashmiri saffron was exported for the first time after it got the GI certification.

“I am sure that its export will grow much more into Dubai and other cities of the UAE and elsewhere," he said according to KNS correspondent.

Kashmiri Saffron is known for its medicinal value globally and represents the rich cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.

During the launch, Choudhary also said, “J&K is known for tourism, hospitality, beauty, handicrafts, Pashmina across the world. J&K has been undergoing a transformation not only in its political and legal arena but a lot of reforms are going on in the economy. Tourism and handicrafts contribute 10 to 15 % of J&K economy. But Horticulture and agriculture gives sustenance to the economy of J&K. Basmati known for aroma worldwide is grown in RS Pura of J&K”

Secretary Agriculture is leading a 20-member delegation of businessmen and government officials from Jammu and Kashmir to the four-day food security summit, which started on 8th of December.
The meet is Organised by the Consulate General of India in Dubai in association with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and Invest India.
The event brings several key stakeholders from both the countries on one platform to share their experiences, deliberate on solutions and explore ways to further increase the collaboration in the food security sector.(KNS)
