Violent protests in Ladakh over statehood demand leave four dead, dozens injured

Leh, Sept 24 (KNS): At least four people were killed and dozens injured on Wednesday in Leh after protesters demanding statehood clashed with police, officials said. Demonstrators pelted stones, set a police vehicle on fire, and attacked the local BJP office, prompting authorities to impose restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.

Security forces, including police and paramilitary personnel, deployed in large numbers, used tear gas and lathi charges to control the situation. The order issued by the administration bars any procession, rally, or march without prior written approval. It also prohibits the use of vehicles with loudspeakers, statements that could disturb public peace, and assemblies of five or more people within Leh. Officials said the measures aim to maintain public order and prevent further escalation.

The unrest followed a two-week hunger strike by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been demanding dialogue with the Centre over Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule and the grant of statehood. Wangchuk ended his 15-day strike after two participants required hospitalization. In a video message, he urged the youth to maintain peace and continue peaceful protests, noting that previous efforts, including marches and strikes, had not received a response.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

A shutdown was observed across Leh, and the closing ceremony of the region’s cultural festival was canceled. The Department of Information and Public Relations said the decision was taken to ensure safety and that it thanked artists, troupes, tourists, and residents for their participation.
Sajjad Kargili, a leader of the Kargil Democratic Alliance, said the situation in Leh was the result of unaddressed demands and called on the government to resume dialogue and fulfill Ladakh’s demand for statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion.

He also appealed to people to remain peaceful.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah commented that Ladakh was not promised statehood and noted that the region had accepted UT status in 2019. Mehbooba Mufti, J&K lead, said the unrest in Leh reflects growing discontent among residents who feel betrayed and let down by unfulfilled promises. She urged the government to address the root causes of the protests transparently and beyond immediate crisis management.

Authorities said the situation is being monitored and security measures remain in place to prevent further incidents.(KNS).
