Srinagar, Dec 30 (KNS): The inspector general of Police Kashmir zone, Vijay Kumar has completed two years in office as IGP Kashmir zone of Jammu and Kashmir.

As per details available with Kashmir News Service (KNS), Vijay Kumar was appointed as IGP Kashmir on 28 December 2019, replacing S P Pani.

Vijay Kumar, a 1997 batch IPS officer, has experience in handling anti-militancy operations in Kashmir and anti-Maoist operations in Bastar area of Chhattisgarh.

Kumar has received three gallantry medals from the Central government for his role in anti-terror operations.

Kumar was brought to J&K seven months ago before being appointed as IGP in December 2019 from Chhattisgarh where he was IG, CRPF in the Chhattisgarh sector. 

Kumar played a crucial role during many state elections in 2018 for which he was awarded the Election Commission Award by the President.

He has received three gallantry medals from the Central government for his role in anti-militancy operations and has also received a gallantry award from the J&K government.

He had also handled the Jat agitation in 2016.

A postgraduate from JNU, Kumar has served in J&K Police in various capacities in the past. He is the first appointed IG of the newly created Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. (KNS)
