VC Cluster University Srinagar Visits Government College of Engineering and Technology, Safapora

Srinagar July 11:(KNS)    Vice Chancellor, Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Qayyum Husain along with Controller Examinations and In-charge Registrar, Dr Khurshid Ahmad Mir, visited Government College of Engineering and Technology, Safapora Ganderbal on 10th of July,2021. On his maiden visit to the only government college of technical education in the valley, he interacted with the Heads of various Departments and teaching faculty of the college. 
     After reception and introductory remarks by the Principal of the college, Dr Rouf Ahmad Khan, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor listened to a detailed presentation about the college, its journey of working from temporary accommodation at GDC Sumbal and finally its shift to the permanent campus at Safapora Ganderbal. In his address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor touched upon some important challenges and the need for timely addressal confronting the higher education system in Jammu and Kashmir. His vision, with reference to the condition of higher education in J&K, mainly focussed on scientifically exploring and revisiting the collectivistic cultural and sociological imagination of the region. He further addressed the indispensable nature of technical education in Jammu & Kashmir, its role in creating a job friendly environment and its contribution in bringing an economy on the path of development. He asserted that in contemporary higher education scenario, universities should necessarily have architecture, engineering and medical colleges as affiliating institutions to systematically promote technical education. He also suggested for industrial tours to reputed industries and IITs across the country in order to expose students to an advanced work culture and industrial environment. 
  While interacting with the faculty, he impressed upon the need of experimentation in teaching pedagogies and methodologies, keeping in view the changing trends in global higher education. He further maintained that GCET Safapora will hopefully run courses in M.Tech in future. Referring to French Revolution, he desired the teachers to appropriate their advanced knowledge in engineering fields by practically applying it to help society prosper in all directions. He also stressed upon the importance of applied sciences and the need of advanced laboratories to produce better researchers. Moreover, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor spoke on the importance of the establishment of a valley based Common Instrumentation Centre. This centre, he asserted, will benefit students and researchers across J&K. 
     After the interaction, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor also inspected the college and visited the administration block, the college library, workshop, the academic blocks and took due note of the ongoing construction and infrastructure works. Noticing that the college is in its developmental phase, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor assured full corporation in developing GCET Safapora into a reputed institute of technical education in the valley. He also assured the timely addressal of the issues like the dearth of permanent teaching and non-teaching staff, road, fencing and hostel facilities. He specifically impressed upon the need to set up a dispensary centre in the college in order to avoid the medical inconveniences faced by students. Further, he talked about setting up of computer laboratory to facilitate preservation and utilization of knowledge and information. His commitment and resolve reflected the urge to see technical education prosper and flourish in Jammu & Kashmir for which, he asserted, GCET Safapora can play a pivotal role.
During the inspection, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor suggested to install solar panels on the surrounding hills and start skill development courses in order to revisit and revive nearly extinct local crafting and manufacturing skills.(KNS)
