Bandipora, Mar 23 (KNS): Healthcare services in the upper reaches of Bandipora district have been severely disrupted due to the prolonged and unauthorised absence of medical staff at several Health & Wellness Centres, raising serious concerns among residents.
As per an official communication issued by the Block Medical Officer (BMO) Bandipora, multiple Mid-Level Health Providers (MLHPs) were found absent from duty without prior permission. The notice directs the concerned staff to immediately report back and submit explanations for their absence.
Locals, however, allege that the issue runs deeper, claiming that such absenteeism continues with the tacit approval of certain higher authorities. They believe some staff members are deliberately allowed to remain engaged in private practice for personal monetary gain instead of serving at their designated postings.
The impact of this alleged negligence is being felt most in far-flung villages, where residents already struggle with poor connectivity and lack of transport. With health centres often found locked or unattended, patients are forced to travel long distances even for basic medical attention.

“We depend entirely on these centres, but many times they remain closed. In emergencies, this becomes life-threatening,” said a local resident, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Health experts stress that consistent presence of medical personnel is vital in such remote areas, where primary health centres act as the first and often only point of care for the population.
The situation has sparked fresh demands for strict monitoring, accountability, and immediate corrective measures to ensure uninterrupted healthcare delivery.
Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Bandipora has assured action, stating that he will personally visit the affected centres and ensure necessary steps are taken against the absentee staff.
Authorities are now expected to act swiftly to restore normal functioning and rebuild public trust in the healthcare system. (KNS)
