Srinagar-Jammu highway restored, flights resume after day's halt


Srinagar, Feb 05 (KNS): Air traffic between Kashmir and the rest of the country was restored on Thursday after remaining suspended for a day due to snowfall in the valley, officials said. 

The first flight landed at Srinagar Airport this morning, an official of the Airport Authority of India said.

The air traffic between Srinagar airport, the only civilian airport in Kashmir, and rest of the country was suspended due to snowfall which continued till Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, the authorities restored vehicular movement on Srinagar-Jammu national highway after it remained closed for two days due to bad weather.

The Valley is currently going through a 20-day-long 'Chilla-i-Khurd' (small cold) which shall be followed by a 10-day 'Chilla-i-Bachha' (baby cold).

For the past several days, snowfall across the Kashmir Valley affected normal life with all flights cancelled at Srinagar airport on Sunday, while traffic on the strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway was stopped for nearly four hours following a landslide in Ramban district

Heavy snowfall was reported in the higher reaches of the valley, while the plains saw a moderate snowfall.(KNS)
