Rajya Sabha Member Choudhary Ramzan Reviews Andaman Food Security, Demands Clarity on Storage Costs

NEW DELHI, Jan. 09 (KNS) ; Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan, a National Conference (NC) member of the Rajya Sabha, on Friday conducted a strategic review of food storage infrastructure in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He directed officials to prioritize the development of permanent, cost-effective storage solutions over reliance on private rentals to ensure long-term food security for the Union Territory.

Presiding over a high-level meeting in Port Blair, Choudhary Ramzan as per news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) engaged with senior officials from the Food Corporation of India (FCI), the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC), and the UT’s Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs. The meeting, themed “Storage of Foodgrains Existing Infrastructure and Future Strategy,” focused on fortifying the archipelago’s supply chain for essential commodities.

The Rajya Sabha member as per news agency emphasized fiscal accountability, issuing a direct call for comprehensive data on expenditures for private storage facilities. “Transparent accounting and a swift transition to permanent, scientific storage infrastructure are essential to curb recurring costs and ensure sustainable management,” Ramzan stated, according to the Kashmir News Service (KNS).

The discussions acknowledged the unique logistical challenges posed by the island territory’s geography. Officials presented plans to augment existing storage capacity and streamline the movement of foodgrains.

Attending officials assured the member that dedicated FCI teams conduct rigorous, regular quality inspections to ensure all foodgrains meet stringent safety standards. The meeting concluded with a consensus that continuous monitoring and inter-agency coordination are fundamental to maintaining these protocols.
