PDP condemns killings of farmers in UP, demands repealing of farm laws

Jammu, Oct 06 (KNS): Expressing his anguish over gruesome killings of farmers by BJP goons in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) demanded action against those involved in committing this heinous crime by abusing power.

“The video, which has gone viral in the social media is a glaring example of how peaceful protesting farmers were mowed down by the BJP goons”, general secretary of the PDP, Sardar Amreek Singh Reen said while addressing a joint press conference with Sardar Sukhvinder Singh and other leaders.

Mr. Singh alleged that son of the Union Minister of State for Home had brazenly killed farmers protesting against the farm laws by running his car over them. “Instead of taking action against those responsible, the police there had arrested opposition leaders who were on their way to console the injured farmers”, he regretted and pointed out that the Lakhimpur Kheri incident has exposed BJP.

“What is happening with farmers today is extremely sad, given the immense contribution made by farmers to India’s development and progress,” PDP general secretary said, calling for immediate revocation of the laws, which he said were detrimental to the interests not only of the agricultural community but the entire country.

He demanded immediate scrapping of the three farm laws enacted by the Centre while calling for detailed discussions with farmers to find a way forward.

Pointing out that many farmers had died over the course of the ongoing protests against the laws, the PDP general secretary said it was high time the Central government realized its blunder and withdrew the legislations in the interests of the farmers and the nation.

“Farmers of Jammu and Kashmir will not remain as a mute spectator to the atrocities committed on agitating farmers”, Mr. Reen said and asserted that PDP, as a principal opposition party of J&K, will oppose oppressive methods being adopted by the present dispensation. “Don't try to stifle the voice of agitating farmers through oppressive means”, Reen warned.

While strongly condemning the killing of three civilians including M L Bindroo in Kashmir on Tuesday evening, PDP general secretary said that violence is no solution to any problem. “This vicious cycle of violence must be ended”, he said and regretted that killings are going unabated in Jammu and Kashmir but those at the helm of the affairs are claiming that situation is normal in J&K.

Replying to the question, PDP general secretary defended the stand of party president Mehbooba Mufti to initiate dialogue with Pakistan to restore lasting peace in the sub-continent. “Dialogue is the solution of all problems”, Singh argued.

Saying that dialogue is the only mean to solve all vexed problems, Mr. Reen reiterated that the holistic path shown by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the only way to restore sustainable peace in this region.

“Dialogue is the only option to establish peace in this region” Singh said, adding that “former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had stated that we can change friends but not neighbourers so both the neighbouring countries have no option but to go for talks”.

Balbir Singh, Sohit Sharma, Pankaj Dutt, Varinder Singh Sonu, Ranbir Singh Manga, and Harmeet Singh were also present at the press conference. (KNS)
