Pattan, March 04 (KNS): Residents of Pattan area of Baramulla district on Saturday held a protest demonstration and blocked national highway against installation of smart meters in the area

Reports reaching Kashmir News Service KNS said residents blocked the highway near PDD office and staged demonstrations against installation of smart meters in the area.

The protesting residents urged administration to revisit the decision of installation of smart meters, saying that they can't afford to pay excessive bills generated by the devices.

One of the protesters told KNS most of them have single bread earners in the family and they too are labourers.

She said their children are jobless, how can they pay hefty bills generated by these smart meters.

The protesters claimed that they won’t allow installation of these meters and will continue to hit roads if authorities force them.

Notably, J&K government started process of installing smart meters in December 2020 to control electricity thefts.

However, residents of several areas have opposed this move and also held protest over installation of smart meters. (KNS)
