SRINAGAR JUNE 05 (KNS):'  To mark  the World Environment Day, a grand function was organised by District Election Office, Srinagar in collaboration with Education Department under SVEEP outreach activity at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Raj Bagh here today.

Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mohammad Aijaz Asad was the Chief Guest on the occasion, who launched a plantation drive by planting saplings of Deovdar tree.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner said the World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5th for awareness and action on the protection of environment. He said everyone must contribute for restoring relationship with nature and called for community participation and support for local conservation efforts.

On the occasion, the DC adminstered the pledge oof Oath and appealed the students and other participants to benevolently pledge and commit themselves to protect and sustain the pristine environment of Kashmir.

The DC also make a mention of the initiative ‘Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) Movement’, launched by the Prime Minister on the occasion of World Environment Day via video conferencing, the campaign launched with a “call for papers”, inviting ideas and suggestions from Academics, Universities and Research Institutions for promoting an Environmentally Conscious Lifestyle.

The Deputy  Commissioner further said it is the duty of every citizen, with dedicated and farsighted plans and actions, to leave a better earth for the future generations.

Depity District Election Officer, Shakeel Hussain, Principal GGHS School, Ms Mehmooda, Deputy Chief Education Officer, Dr Anjum Raja, School Staff, Student and other concerned were present on the occasion.(KNS)
