1. He never used to wear suits and leather shoes. Chapels and sports shoes were his favorite. He was offered a senior cabinet berth at Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet but he refused to accept the same.

2. He loved playing the veena, a musical instrument.
3. He was a voracious reader of both Quran as well as Geeta.
4. Was a pure vegetarian.
5. He hated being called His Excellency.
6. In spite of loving his brother, he never allowed him to stay in the President’s house during his tenure as the President. Rather Mr #Kalam’s brother stayed in a rented apartment.
7. Once, Mr #Kalam invited 52 members of his extended family to Rashtrapati Bhavan and they stayed there for eight days. #Kalam out of his own pocket paid the rent for their stay. Even the cost of a cup of tea wasn’t spared. Everything was accounted for and an amount of Rs 3,52,000 was paid to the exchequer by #Kalam from his own pocket.
8. In December 2005, #Kalam’s 90-year-old brother along with the family went for performing Hajj. When the Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia came to know about the arrival of the President’s relatives, he telephoned #Kalam, expressing his wish to extend a VIP treatment to them. #Kalam straightaway refused the offer, telling the Indian Ambassador that his family should not be accorded with any special treatment. Rather they should be treated at par with other pilgrims.
9. Once Rashtrapati Bhavan was planning to host Iftaar Party. When #Kalam heard about the same, he enquired about the expenditure incurred upon the feast. Rs 2.5 lac, replied the Hospitality department. Why not spend this amount on some orphanages?, suggested #Kalam. Later, the amount was given to the orphanages out of #Kalam’s own pocket.
10. While taking a stroll around the lawns of Rashtrapati Bhavan during winters, he noticed that the guard quarters were not equipped with any heating arrangements. He personally instructed the officers to provide all requisite infrastructures required during winters and summers in guard quarters.(KNS)
