Srinagar, May 10 (KNS): The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Tuesday organized a workshop on patent filing for faculty members of the college.

The workshop was attended by Director NIT Prof. (Dr) Rakesh Sehgal, Institute’s Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari, Deans, Heads of Departments, and all faculty members of the institute.

On the occasion, Prof. Sehgal said patents are a way of protecting an invention. It awards rights to the inventor and stops others from claiming ownership of the technology, he said.

Prof. Sehgal also briefed about ‘why start-ups and innovations are important and urged young faculty members to "bring their ideas to reality through the use of technology and knowledge".

While appreciating Er. Danish Ahmed for granting patent grant three inventions, Prof. Sehgal said it is a proud moment for NIT Srinagar and advised young faculty members to file patents for their fundamental research findings.

He stressed increasing Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) from NIT Srinagar. “Both patents and IRPs help colleges and universities to improve their ranking, establish an innovation ecosystem, incubate knowledge-based start-ups, and enhance research activity”, Prof. Sehgal said.

Dean Research & Consultancy, Prof. (Dr.) M.F Wani said the main objective of this workshop was to increase the awareness of patent filing and its various aspects like how to search, draft including filing and prosecution procedure,s, etc.

“Number of patents applied for, granted, and commercialized by institutes is factored in the rankings framework. It is no surprise that top-ranked institutes are also the leading filers of patents,” he said.

On the occasion, Er. Danish Ahmed, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering Department was facilitated for his contribution towards innovation by Director NIT Prof. Sehgal, Registrar NIT Srinagar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari, Dean Research & Consultancy, Prof. (Dr.) M.F Wani, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Najeeb-ud-din, Dean Alumni and International Affairs, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Shafi Mir, etc.

Er. Danish Ahmed delivered his keynote presentation on ‘Innovative  Mindset and Patent Filing,”. So far his three projects were granted patents including ‘Modified low-cost solar water purifier, Low-cost gas vent for LPG heaters, and Solar water cooler for remote areas.

Some of his published patents include, Portable low-cost instant water filter (Fer), Low-cost atmospheric water extractor (Fer), Portable energy-saving heating device, Portable solar water heater, walking stick mobile charger, Portable low-cost instant cater Cooler, Remote controlled portable AC,  low-cost electronic combination lock(Fer) and Heavy duty electronic door lock.

While NIT as applicant Er. Danish Ahmed has published two innovations including, Microwave sensor-based earthquake alarm and Electronic sound-controlled vase.

He emphasized that institutions rely on the important aspect of innovation and patenting. Innovation and patenting support economic growth and projects which support the development of innovation and start-ups have big potential in reducing unemployment”, Er. Danish said.

He explained the procedure of filing patents in India and the stages before the grant of the final patent. Er. Danish motivated the young faculty members for filing the patents.

“You do not need to be a scientist to become an innovator. Innovation is not a compulsion, but a passion, it needs you to understand how a thing works rather than why it works,” he said.

 Later Er. Danish also answered many of the questions that were raised by the attendees and cleared their doubts regarding patents and how the process takes place.

A formal vote of thanks was presented by Prof. GA Harmain. He expressed gratitude to Er. Danish for encouraging the young faculty members to file patents and thanked all faculty members, for making the workshop a grand success.(KNS)
