Srinager, Jan ,25 (KNS): Most parts of Kashmir received fresh snowfall and rain on Wednesday leading to the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, officials said here.


While the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir experienced moderate to heavy snowfall, many areas in the plains received light to moderate snowfall. Several places including the famous ski resort of Gulmarg, tourist resorts of Pahalgam and Sonamarg experienced fresh snowfall.

A MeT official said that overall, the weather would very likely remain erratic with cloudy, intermittent light rain and snow till ending January across J&K.

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was  blocked due to continuous shooting stones at Mehar and Panthyal, said an official while  advising people not to travel on the national highway between Nashri and Banihal till Bharat Jodo yatra is over.

"People are advised not to travel on Jammu Srinagar NHW between Nashri and Banihal till Bharat Jodo yatra is over," it said.

Meanwhile, one person was dead, while several others were injured after boulders rolled down the National Highway at Ramban district. The deceased was identified as Muneeb Tak - the driver of the truck and a resident of Kulgam

"Avalanche with low danger level is likely to occur above 2600 metres over Bandipore, Ganderbal in next 24 hours. General public is advised to have Valley movement with care and Avoid movement on slopes," said JKDMA officials.

Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chillai Kalan', the 40-day harshest weather period when the chances of snowfall are maximum and most frequent. Chillai Kalan begins on December 21 and ends on January 30.(KNS)
