Srinagar, July 18 (KNS): For the second Friday in a row, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said he was placed under house detention, with all roads and lanes leading to his residence barricaded, causing inconvenience to the entire neighbourhood.
In a statement issued to KNS, the Mirwaiz condemned the restrictions and said that no amount of lockdowns or bans can erase the memory of Kashmir’s martyrs. “Let me make it clear to the rulers – the memory of our martyrs cannot be regulated. It lives in our hearts and in the collective memory of the people,” he said.
Mirwaiz also expressed disappointment over not being allowed to visit Jama Masjid in Srinagar for Friday prayers and to pay homage at the martyrs’ graveyard.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
“The martyrs of July 13, 1931, were the pioneers of Kashmir’s political movement — a just struggle against oppression. They continue to be our inspiration,” he said, adding that facts and history cannot be rewritten through restrictions or communal narratives.
He urged the authorities to respect the people’s sentiments and allow peaceful remembrance of historical events that are deeply rooted in Kashmir’s collective consciousness.(KNS)
