Srinagar, Nov 19 (KNS): Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu range Mukesh Singh on Thursday said the huge cache of arms recovered from militants killed in Nagrota area on Srinagar – Jammu highway seems the plan of the militants was “something big” because never in the past such kind of recovery was made from the slain militants during encounters.
According to Kashmir News Service (KNS), Singh said that four militants killed in a brief encounter at Nagrota along Jammu – Srinagar highway were carrying 11 rifles and it was for the “first time” such a huge recovery has been made.
Refuting any security lapse, IGP Jammu said that as Block Development Council (BDC) elections are approaching across J&K, like past militants this time also tried to disrupt peaceful atmosphere and instill fear among electorates to stay away from polls. He said forces agencies are always alert to foil their designs and there is no question of weakness in the security grid.
“We had intelligence inputs regarding fresh infiltration bids by Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Toiba but security agencies were on toes and alert to foil any such misadventure”, IGP Jammu told reporters.
Singh said that on Nagrota Ban toll plaza which lies on 270-km long Srinagar – Jammu highway, a routine security checking was going on. “At 05:00 am in the morning, a vehicle was intercepted whose driver hesitated during questioning and started running away from the scene. Soon we started searches in the vehicle, we were fired upon”, IGP Jammu said.
He added that in retaliatory fire four militants were killed from whose possession 11 AK-47 rifles were recovered. “Besides rifles, three pistols, satellite phones, mobile phones and compass were also recovered from the possession of slain militants”, he said.
While replying to a query, the IGP Jammu said that this is a matter of investigation where from militants managed to reach here. “We have started investigations and further details will be shared accordingly”, IGP Jammu added.
Asked about the driver, the top police officer said he managed to escape from the spot during exchange of fire. “We have started manhunt. Soon he will be taken to task”, he added.
Meanwhile security has been tightened on Srinagar – Jammu highway besides parts of Jammu. A top police official told KNS that security has been beefed up in and around the vital installation in Jammu region after four militants were killed in a brief exchange of fire in Nagrota Ban toll plaza on Srinagar – Jammu highway.
He said several Nakas were established at sensitive places in Jammu areas and all electronic gadgets including CCTVs and drones were put on alert to keep eye on suspected elements. (KNS)
