Srinagar, Nov 11 (KNS): The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader and Member of Parliament from Anantnag (Retd) Justice Hasnain Masoodi on Thursday said the incumbent Administration’s inability to provide adequate compensation to the horticulturalists after the untimely October snowfall in worst affected areas of south Kashmir including Kulgam, DH Pora, HS Bugh, Devsar has created a whirlpool of financial distress to the orchardists.

He said this while presiding over a meeting of Party Functionaries at Chawalgam, Kulgam earlier today. Among others State Secretary Sakina Itoo, District President Kulgam Abdul Majeed Larmi, Constituency In-Charge Imran Nabi Dar, District Secretary Safdar Khan, block Presidents, YNC South Zone President PZ Feroz, YNC DP Adil Guroo and Party’s district parent body, and YNC functionaries from all four constituencies of the district were also present in the meeting.

During the breadth of the meeting, the party leaders acquainted the visiting MP about the deteriorating situation Vis a Vis electricity, water availability in their areas. They also raised the inadequate compensation announced by the government for the orchardists who have suffered almost 80 percent damage in their orchards due to untimely October snowfall. The Member of Parliament was told about the erosion of growth and development in the entire district. He was also apprised about the failure of the administration in upgrading the available infrastructure including health sector in the district.

Taking exception to the lackadaisical approach of the administration towards mitigating problems of people following recent snowfall, the functionaries in their interaction with the visiting MP said that no satisfactory measures were taken to address electricity issues. “Nothing is being done to repair damaged transformers, overhead wires, culverts and bridges in the district. Prices of household commodities are skyrocketing. There are no flying squads on ground to check price rise. The administration seems to have relinquished its duties and is blind folded to the woes of people that have surfaced in wake of the onset of the ongoing winter season,” the functionaries said.

On the occasion Masoodi assured the functionaries that he will take up the issues at all appropriate forums for their speedy redressal.

Later, Masoodi presided over a review meeting of local horticulture officials and inquired about the underway measures to ease the suffering of horticulturalists in the district. He also discussed with them the sleuth of measures both long term and short term that the department is mulling to revive the local horticulture industry. (KNS)
