JMC Launches Pre-Eid Crackdown on Unhygienic Meat, Imposes Rs 20,000 Fine

JAMMU, Mar 17 (KNS) : In the run-up to Eid-al-Fitr, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has intensified its vigilance to ensure the supply of safe and quality meat to consumers, imposing a fine of Rs 20,000 on multiple retail shops for selling unstamped and substandard products.

The special enforcement drive was conducted under the direction of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav and Joint Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) Abdul Star. A joint team led by Municipal Veterinary Officer Dr. Jaswant Singh, along with officials from the Sheep Husbandry Department, carried out inspections at various markets falling under the civic body’s jurisdiction.

Officials on Monday said that during the surprise checks, the team seized approximately 15 kilograms of substandard and unhygienic meat, which was subsequently disposed of as per standard protocols. A collective fine of Rs 20,000 was also slapped on errant shopkeepers and collected on the spot for flouting norms.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Authorities directed meat sellers to ensure that animals are slaughtered only at JMC’s licensed and recognized slaughterhouses. "Strict instructions have been issued to refrain from illegal slaughtering at shops or anywhere within municipal limits," an official said.

Traders were also warned against hanging dressed mutton or chicken carcasses outside their establishments and were ordered to maintain proper cleanliness in and around their premises. During the drive, vendors were sensitized on crucial aspects of hygiene, including proper waste disposal, usage of clean water, and maintenance of cold storage facilities.

Dr. Jaswant stated that the civic body would further intensify such inspection drives in the coming days to ensure consumers receive wholesome meat.

The JMC has urged residents to report any instances of unhygienic practices to the authorities immediately. (KNS)
