JK:Six civilians among 10 killed in Cross border shelling at LoC, dozens injured

Srinagar, Nov 13 (KNS):Ten people, including six civilians, three Army soldiers and one BSF jawan, were killed and over 20 others injured in ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) in four districts of J&K on Friday.

According to the Army, Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violations along the LoC in multiple sectors, including Dawar in Bandipora, Keran in Kupwara, Uri and Naugam in Baramulla in the Kashmir valley.

“Pakistan used mortars and other weapons. Pakistan deliberately targeted civilian areas. Three Indian army soldiers were also killed and three soldiers were injured,” Srinagar-based Army spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia said.

Reports said the cross-LoC shelling triggered panic along the LoC hamlets with residents seen rushing to safer places. The escalation in tensions came only five days after four Indian soldiers and three militants were killed in an exchange along the LoC.

Earlier Col Kalia said suspicious movement was observed by the Army at the forward posts along the LoC in Keran sector (in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district). “The suspected infiltration bid was foiled by alert troops,” he said. “They (Pakistan army) fired mortars and other weapons. Befitting response is being given,” he said.

In Poonch, five civilians were injured as mortars rained down on the forward areas. Similarly, two schoolgirls were among the five civilians injured in Pakistani shelling in Bandipora. All the injured were admitted to the local primary health centres, where their condition was said to be stable.

An official said Almost all BSF units along the LoC are facing heaving firing since morning and an effective retaliation by the troops, artillery regiment and support weapons has been mounted, a senior officer of the force said.
The BSF works under the operational command of the Army at the LoC (KNS)
