Srinagar, Feb 25 (KNS): The government on Saturday clarified that J&K is last in the country where property tax is being imposed and added tax amount to be paid by a property owner is very less.


Addressing a press conference at TRC meeting hall, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri said that J&K is last in the country where decision of imposing property tax was taken. "Unlike other States and UTs, J&K is last in the country where property tax has been imposed," VK Bidhuri as per KNS told reporters.

He said the rate of tax on property is very less and will be utilized on the welfare and betterment of people. "Property Tax to be used for people's welfare and development. The tax amount will ensure better facilities and services to people. There is no need to go panic," Bidhuri said.

He said the tax amount to be paid once in a year and it will remain in the account of Srinagar Municipal Corporation which is an authorized body to use the money for betterment of people. 

"There is no need to go panic. The 1/3rd of population of J&K is already exempted from property tax as their properties come less than 1000 square feet. Besides the tax charges are very less as compare to other parts of the country," he added.

"Those having 1500 square feet of property will have to pay property tax. Those having 1000 square feet of property are exempted ," Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, VK Bidhuri held.

Speaking at the occasion, Commissioner SMC, Athar Amir Khan said the property tax will be paid from April 2023 and is aimed to ensure better facilities to people. (KNS)
